Manual Handling
Course Aims
At the end of the course, participants will be able to:
- State the principals behind safe manual handling of loads
- Demonstrate how to lift, carry and lower all heavy loads within their personal capacity, using aids or assistance as necessary
- State the parts of the body which are at risk of injury when lifting incorrectly and the possible injuries that may occur as a result
- List the techniques that can be applied to the manual handling of loads in order to achieve economy of effort
- Suggest ways in which tasks involving the lifting and moving of heavy loads can be achieved safely and with minimum effort
- Explain briefly the risk assessment process in relation to manual handling

- Structure and function of spine and associated injuries
- Development of handling techniques in a wide range of situations
- Recognise accident levels associated with manual handling
- Problem solving in relation to manual handling
